Our Story

More than 400 employees. A recognized leader – and one of the largest – in the industry. A responsible corporate citizen. Sound like a huge corporation? Not quite – it's a family business.

Our Origins

In the 1970s, lots of changes were taking place in the energy industry, and Marvin White understood and seized the opportunity. Marv was a senior executive with a long track record of accomplishment at Columbia Gas. In the next decade, Marv capitalized on the deregulation of energy markets. As deregulation enabled changes, Marv worked with customers and suppliers to develop the very first “self-help” program in the United States. Through deregulation and “self-help” this allowed industrial customers to contract with third-party marketers for their supply of the natural gas commodity.

What made Marv so savvy? From his service in World War II to the time the Ohio House of Representatives honored him in 1986, paired with his family-man mentality, Marv showed his leadership skills again and again. After the war, he received a degree in Civil Engineering, and joined Columbia Gas. Marv spend decades working on his home state of Ohio, moving up within the company and in 1976 he was named Chairman and CEO of Columbia Distribution Companies.

And so, with deregulation and Marv’s self-help innovation underway, his ideas and efforts revolutionized the industry.

Our Growth

In 1989, Marv founded IGS Energy with his son Scott. A privately held company, IGS Energy, began as a wholesale supplier of Ohio-produced natural gas. In the late 1990s, Marv’s efforts were realized again when “choice” programs were made available to residential and small commercial customers. These programs allowed them the same freedoms the self-help programs offered industrial customers.

IGS Energy has been at the forefront of this evolving business model, and continues to set the bar very high. We strive for innovation and are dedicated to pursuing energy efficiency and U.S. energy independence. This mentality of continuous improvement and dedicated employees has made IGS Energy one of America’s largest independent energy suppliers, serving more than one million customers in 11 states.

Our Future

IGS Energy is led by Marv’s son, another industry expert, Scott White. In January 2011, IGS Energy acquired Accent Energy through common ownership – allowing IGS Energy to expand services into deregulated electricity markets, and to further expand our natural gas footprint. IGS Energy’s latest project is investing in compressed natural gas. We have partnered with the City of Dublin to create the city’s 1st Natural Gas Fueling Station. We are continuously looking for strategic opportunities to better serve our customers.
