Does Solar Energy Work on Cloudy Days?

What If There Is No Sun?

Solar energy systems run on sunlight, which leaves many to wonder if cloudy days will leave them without lights. Solar panels typically generate between 10 to 25 percent of their capacity on cloudy days, and as a result, green energy company developers have created some workarounds.

  • Solar systems have a variety of configurations to ensure that you always have energy. One solution places solar panels in stand-by mode, which switches you back to the standard power company grid until the sun starts shining again.
  • Another solution is increasing the size of the battery bank. When the sun is shining, the battery bank stores up energy for later use. Those who live in cloud-prone areas simply need to store up more energy.
  • Some solar panels capture a wider range of the light spectrum, including red and blue wavelengths. These panels work better in overcast areas.

Wind Power and Lack of Wind

Wind-powered turbines look like modern day windmills and are erected in groups called farms. The farm locations are selected by the energy producer based on the amount of wind they receive. However, if a lack of wind does not result in enough energy, consumers will be supplied by the traditional power company grid from their energy supplier.

So what does this all mean? It means that green energy is always working for you, whether the sun is shining or not.
